Access to quality eye care remains a significant challenge for many in rural Tanzania, leaving thousands to struggle with vision problems that could be easily treated. In our ongoing mission to address this urgent need, The Mo Dewji Foundation (MDF) has resumed its eye care services for 2025 with two minor camps in Masiwani District, Tanga Region, and Usangi District, Kilimanjaro Region. These camps are part of our continued efforts to bring sight back to some of the most underserved and marginalized communities in Tanzania.

In Masiwani, Tanga, we returned to honor the requests of patients who had benefited from last year’s camp and were eager to restore vision in their second eye. Our team performed life-changing surgeries and conducted follow-up check-ups to ensure successful recoveries. The joy and gratitude expressed by patients who could now see the world more clearly were a testament to the impact of these interventions.
In Usangi, Kilimanjaro, the demand for eye care was equally high. The camp began with mass screenings, where hundreds of people received eye examinations and treatment for various conditions, including cataracts, infections, and refractive errors. Free eyeglasses were provided to those in need of corrective lenses, while others received essential eye drops to treat infections and dryness. Vision-restoring surgeries were also performed, ensuring that individuals with severe vision impairment could regain their sight.
Since the launch of our free eye care program in November 2023, MDF has reached a cumulative total of 41,263 individuals across Tanzania. This includes the distribution of 25,450 free eye drops, 17,396 free reading glasses, and the successful completion of 2,866 life-changing eye surgeries, with 266 of these surgeries conducted during our recent camps. These numbers reflect our unwavering commitment to ensuring that quality eye care is accessible to all, regardless of location or financial status.
Our work is far from over, and we remain dedicated to expanding our outreach to serve even more underserved communities.
